The 4th of July is coming and everyone in America is getting their grills and their grilling supplies ready for the big day!

We love to gather around on patios with family and celebrate our Independence Day the right way.

We start by planning out what we are going to do that day, and when that’s figured out, we get our guest list done. Then, we follow up and invite those guests! A few days before the BIG day, we begin shopping for all the needed supplies to make our day a GREAT one.

It’s very exciting to set up our space in a festive way, and to create a delicious menu that all will enjoy. When we are supply shopping for the event, we look for things that are red, blue and white and stock up on all things stars! When we grocery shopping for the event, we get burgers, hot dogs, buns, corn, salad, drinks and all sorts of fun blue, red and white desserts. People (me included) absolutely adore the holidays, because it means great food, great drinks, great fun, and a great time! They take us out of our daily routines and allow us to unwind, having some very much needed R&R.

To honor this upcoming Independence Day, I have created a delicious and healthy Paleo burger recipe for you. One made with Bison! YUM. It’s lean, juicy and very flavorful. Happy -almost- 4th of July everyone…and enjoy these Bison Burgers with Guacamole!

Bison Burgers with Guacamole

Serves: 5 servings
For the Bison Burgers:
  • 1 lb ground bison
  • 1 egg, whisked
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ purple onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Butter lettuce leaves, as your burger buns (wash and pat dry)
For the Guacamole:
  • 2 medium sized ripe avocados
  • ¼ onion, minced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, minced
  • ½ lemon, juice of
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cilantro, finely chopped
For the Bison Burgers:
  1. Use cutting board and sharp knife to mince garlic cloves and finely chop onion. Set aside.
  2. Add egg to mixing bowl and whisk. Add ground organic bison, onion and garlic to your mixing bowl, and mix well.
  3. Add in spices, and combine all ingredients well (don’t be afraid to use your hands for this!)
  4. Make patties out of the mixture. Recipe makes 5 medium sized patties.
  5. Place patties in the refrigerator and let them sit for 1-2 hours.
  6. Turn on grill on medium-high heat. Once hot, add bison patties and grill for about 5-6 minutes.
  7. Flip and grill for another 5-6 minutes. Be sure you keep an eye on those burgers to keep them from burning!
For the Guacamole:
  1. Prep all your ingredients (dice and cut).
  2. Add avocados and lemon to your Molcajete. Smash them together until they become like a paste.
  3. Add onions, garlic, jalapeno pepper, olive oil, sea salt and pepper. Using a spoon, mix them together until incorporated.
  4. Serve immediately.

− Citrus juicer
− Small spoon
