When I was a little girl and still believed in Santa, my parents, brother and I (my sister wasn’t yet born) would make sure we placed a plate with cookies and a glass of milk by our “chimenea” (fireplace) for Santa before going to bed on Christmas Eve.

Almost every home in Quito-Ecuador has a chimenea, because the city is very high up in the Andes and it gets pretty cold at night year round. So it was perfect, because our home had a large chimenea and we knew Santa would come down through it while we slept, leaving us lots of presents.

My parents told us that Santa’s journey was a long one (I mean, of course, he traveled the entire world in one night) and that we left cookies and milk for him so that he could have energy to keep going with his journey. They told us that cookies and milk were his favorites, and that’s why we treated him with some.

How fun were those days, huh? I swear that once when I was a little girl, I saw Santa’s sleigh in the middle of the night as we were driving back home from grandma’s on Christmas Eve. For real. I think I’ve actually never told this to anyone before, but it was one of those magical moments that immediately reassured me Santa did actually exist.

Until…I found my presents once in our “bodega” (Spanish for storage room) when I was looking for my bike. So sad. I totally confronted my parents about it, being the sassy little girl I was, and they told me that they were just “holding” the presents for Santa. That he had asked them to do so as a favor, since he was “slammed” and had run out of storage himself. I did not buy it. I was heart broken. That was the end of my Santa belief. However, when my sister was born, I became a master pretender for her, and back to leaving cookies for Santa we went.

Because I’ve experienced the magic of believing in Santa, and I know how important it is as a kid to feel like you’re giving something back to Santa in return for all of your sweet presents.
